What is Retinol And What Are The Benefits?

Retinol is said to be one of the golden ingredients and key in helping with the signs of aging. Used in many serums, (like the Joanna Vargas’ Supernova Serum) and moisturizers, it is most commonly used to deliver a natural glow, help with skin tone, acne improvement, and help minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

It is also super important to apply a moisturizing retinol during these colder months, as the skin can become dried out without an added layer of moisture.

How Does Retinol Work?

Retinol is a type of retinoid, which is a class of chemical compounds chemically related to Vitamin A. They help regulate cell growth. Retinoids are used in medicine, with retinol being one of the most soothing to the skin. Other types of retinoids tend to be more harsh to the outer layer of the skin and for the most part, need to be prescribed to by a doctor.

Overall, over-the-counter products that contain retinol will leave you with plumped looking skin, help the redness and inflammation from acne, and give a fresh, revived look. But, how does it work?

Unlike many anti-aging products, retinol does not stay on the top of the skin. Instead, the very small molecules travel under the skin (epidermis) and neutralize free radicals once they reach the middle of the skin (dermis). This causes the production of collagen and elastic fibers which delivers a plumper look to the surface of the skin and helps minimize the signs of aging.

Retinol is also used to help with severe acne and/or scarring. When spread onto the skin- the tiny molecules of retinol works to unclog pores which lets other treatments, serums, or moisturizers work better, lessening the appearance of imperfections. It also helps soothe the inflammation from scarring. For very severe acne though, a prescription may be needed from a doctor.

It is important to first test a small area when you first start using retinol, to see how your skin reacts to it. Because collagen production becomes less as you get older, you can start incorporating a retinol, like the Joanna Vargas Supernova Serum in your middle-to-late twenties.

The Joanna Vargas Supernova Serum is a multidimensional retinol serum that is incredibly lightweight and has added moisturizing ingredients. This serum should only be used at night, before all other serums and moisturizers. Incorporate it in your nightly beauty routine by pumping 1-2 drops on clean, dry skin, including the eye area.

Be sure to apply an SPF after and avoid direct sunlight after applying any type of product that contains retinol.

What Are The Benefits?

  1. Retinol is a primary ingredient that helps with the aging process, helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,  resulting in a more plumped looking skin over time.
  2. Retinol acts as an antioxidant, minimizing the signs of aging.
  3. Because retinol helps unclog pores, it can be used to help clear up imperfections from acne. It also helps reduce the appearance of acne scars.
  4. Retinol helps to even out your skin tone, leaving a healthy, natural-looking glow.
  5. Retinol can also work as a mild exfoliator for an all-over glow.

If you have any concerns or questions about your particular skin type and retinol, consult with your doctor or dermatologist before using to make sure it is right for your skin.
