Top 10 Tips for Healthy Skin

Top 10 Tips for Healthy Skin Not many people realize how important, resistant, and resilient our skin is. Not only is our skin important for protecting us from harmful agents, it also serves as an excellent indicator of our overall health. Aesthetically, our skin is what we put forth everyday and often times one of the first things people notice about us. No matter why you want healthy skin, here are some helpful tips: 1. Wear Sunscreen: The Situation and Pauly D may be telling us that the tanner we are the better we look, but what they fail to acknowledge is the fact that in the past 3 decades more people are diagnosed with skin cancer than ALL other cancers combined on a yearly basis. It’s advisable to get a little sun, just be sure to not make a habit of tanning beds and prolonged sun exposure, which can lead to sunspots and wrinkles. ALWAYS wear some form of SPF: SPF 15 for your face, SPF 30 or greater when out in the sun. 2. Healthy Diet: Believe it or not, our skin is the largest organ of our body. That is why it is important to adhere to a healthy diet. Our skin reflects what we put in. Be sure to drink more water, drink less soda/drinks high in fructose, eat less sugar, less hydrogenated oils in the form of fried foods, less processed foods, and more organic and raw foods. 3. Cater to Your Skin Type: Not all skin is equal. Some of us have very dry skin, very oily skin, or somewhere in between. Skin types may change based on hormones, changing seasons, and diet. Determine what type of skin you have so you can find a fitting skin regiment. 4. Develop Daily Skin Regimen: Once you have figured out what type of skin you have, it is important to develop a daily routine to plan a regimen to take care of your skin. For people who have manageable acne, it is advisable to use a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide. For more stubborn and recurrent acne, it may be most beneficial to visit your dermatologist for acne removal therapy, or prescribed medication. For those who are blessed with clear skin, it is still important to adhere to some form of a skin care regimen, consisting of a cleanser, toner, facial cream, and sunscreen. 5. Never Go To Bed With Makeup: Ladies, I know you have been guilty of going to bed with your makeup on at least once. But no matter how tired you are at the end of the night, never ever EVER go to bed with your makeup on. Your skin will take the hit for your laziness. Makeup removal wipes are very helpful; they are fast and convenient. 6. Exfoliate: Our skin is constantly growing, which equates to a buildup of dead skin on the surface. Investing in some form of skin exfoliation is important to soften up the dull dead skin cells and to unearth smooth, young skin cells underneath. Some people prefer to buy scrubs and exfoliate at home, while others prefer to trust a professional to perform microdermabrasion, a highly effective exfoliating procedure. 7. 3 F’s: Fiber, Flaxseed, and Fruit: Fiber, flaxseed, and fruit all contribute to the growth of new skin cells. Fiber helps to rid the body of toxins, flaxseed has essential Omega-3 oils, and fruit gives us the essential vitamins for skin renewal. 8. Exercise: Being active is part of a healthy lifestyle, but did you know that frequent exercise helps promote healthy skin? When our bodies become more active, our blood flow increases. Increasing blood flow increases the amount of nutrients carried to our skin and other organs. 9. Vitamin supplements: Nowadays, everyone seems to be constantly on the go. Because of our jam-packed lives it’s often easy to overlook having a complete nutritional diet. Luckily we can depend on vitamin supplements to give us the nutrients we lack. 10. Channel stress into something positive: Stress is often to blame for many illnesses, including unhealthy skin. Hormones produced under stress can cause bad blood circulation, leading to dry and irritable skin. Stress may also be responsible for breakouts and may fuel eczema, psoriasis, and rashes. Relax and enjoy healthier skin! I hope these tips give you the fresh, amazing looking skin you’ve been dreaming of! What are your top skin care tips? Photo Courtesy of Chotda, CC-BY-NC-ND 2.0
