Summer Can Be Brutal On Your Skin: The Secrets to Having Great Skin in Blistering Heat
NewYorkTimes.com By JULIE EARLE-LEVINE On Beauty | The Secrets to Having Great Skin in Blistering Heat Sweltering temperatures are wreaking havoc on skin this summer (and its only July!), so New York celebrity facialists are turning to cool, restorative face masks for their A-list clientele. Here, the products and treatments theyre using for picture-perfect skin this season. Cornelia Zicu, the global chief creative officer of Red Door Spas, based in New York, combines hyaluronic acid with a serum of vitamin C, D and E to keep Anne Hathaways skin hydrated. For those who cant make it to a spa, Zicu suggests Red Doors Age Defense Multi Peptide Moisturizer to maintain hydration and prevent signs of aging. Lisa Vela treats the actresses Emma Roberts and Sienna Miller at SoHos AmorePacific Spa, where the Luminous Effect Brightening Mask made of green tea, water lily extract, ginseng and bamboo sap is all the rage right now for its firming and cooling properties. Bonus: its easy to apply the prepackaged, face-shaped hydrating and lifting mask at home (shown above) to brighten skin tone in just 10 minutes. Nearby, at NoHos Eva Scrivo Salon, Ally Kaufman counts Martha Stewart, Katie Lee and Parker Posey as clients. She uses Mask Stimulastine by Yon-Ka, which has peptides sourced from beech buds, soy and milk protein to brighten the complexion and support collagen production. For similar moisturizing effects at home, Kaufman recommends Fruitelia, also by Yon-ka. Further uptown, near Bryant Park, Joanna Vargas, who works with Sofia Coppola and Michelle Williams, swears by a Vitamin C face wash, followed by a mask of calendula oil, hibiscus marigold, shea butter, rich fatty acids and aloe vera juice to improve elasticity and to hydrate. For those who cant snag an appointment, or prefer not to pay $400 for her Summer Recovery Facial, Vargas has shared an at-home, once-a-week recipe for dry, stressed summer skin she says will restore glow, pronto: 1/2 avocado. (Vitamin K helps reduce the appearance of dark circles, while fatty acids hydrate and plump the skin.) 1 egg white. (This will refine and tighten the pores, preventing breakouts.) 1/4 cup cooked oatmeal, cooled and then mashed with enough water to achieve a nice, soft consistency. (Oatmeal is soothing for skin, especially for a bad sunburn. This alleviates the redness and calms any inflammation, including that caused by breakouts.) 1/2 banana. (Its Vitamin C, B6 and potassium are great for the lymphatic system and for hydrating.) Mix all ingredients together and chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before applying the entire mask to the face.
