What Are the Benefits of a Serum?

Any skincare regimen worth its salt includes a serum. But you may ask yourself, what are the benefits of a serum—and do I really even need it? In short, yes.

Woman With Flawless Skin

First of all, what is a serum? Serum has a high concentration of active ingredients and typically comes in either a gel or cream-gel formulation. Serum should be applied after cleansing and before moisturizing.

The texture of a serum is much lighter than a moisturizer. Serums also penetrate much deeper into the skin than moisturizers to address specific concerns including brightening, acne and anti-aging. Serum can also be sparingly used in place of a moisturizer for people with overly oily skin.

Some ingredients to look for in serums include Hyaluronic acid (to hydrate), white tea (to calm redness) and glycolic acid (to exfoliate). Avoid alcohol, which can dry out the skin.
