Seasonal Fruits For Strengthening Skin

Recently I was strolling through a farmer’s market in Portland sampling all the seasonal flavors of succulent berries, peaches, local salamis and (my personal favorite) chocolates, thinking how rich the abundance of these seasonal foods. Hunters and gatherers understood seasonal diets best with its stellar health benefits. With that in mind, these nourishing fruits deserve raucous accolades at the height of their flavorful juicy season. If you have not had the pleasure of tasting some of these luscious fruits, don’t wait for an arm-twister to get your “yum” on. From vendor to vendor you will find quality organic berries and other fruits at your local farmer’s market that are best when eaten fresh, but also lovely as preserves and jams in the winter months.

All of these fruits share in common their high content of Vitamins A and C for restoring and protecting the health of skin. Vitamin C builds immunity and provides that shield from sun damage as it stimulates the growth of new skin cells. The “darker the berry, the sweeter the juice,” and the more antioxidants: for enhancing your skin’s barrier against environmental pollutants and free radicals. Berries often contain trace minerals and iron essential for the ease of blood circulation throughout the body and skin. By protecting your skin from the elements, through an organic produce-rich diet, you build its overall strength and vitality.

Jostaberries (pronounced yostaberry) were bred in Germany as a mix between black currants, which they resemble most, and gooseberry. They have a sweet tart flavor that really bursts in your mouth leaving the palate clean and ready for the next bite.

Blackberries or Marionberries at their peak are so heavy with sweet juice that they drop from the thorny bush that bore them. Another antioxidant and Vitamin C packed berry that grows wild to point of being a nuisance, tolerated albeit for the tasty fat berries.

Blueberries these delicate berries require continual summer heat to ripen to those natural sugary gifts bestowed seasonally. This berry, found in those craved pies and cream cheese, is also one of the dark fruits that are nourishing with their reliable vitamin and antioxidant content. The nutrients available in this yummy blue fruit will help to replenish and bring vigor to your skin with every smoothie sip.

Currants both red and black are hard to get enough of, and are fun to pluck straight from the vine, as tiny as these sweet tart berries are. Even still they pack a lot of flavor in a little package and are high in the ranks for providing vitamins, minerals like iron and, last but definitely not least, antioxidants ‘Tis the season for berries, among other delectable fruits. Your skin will have improved strength and can endure the heat of summer sun fully protected when you include these choice seasonal fruits in your diet daily.
