Remedying Winter Skin By Joanna Vargas

In a past life I must have been a witch as I love to play with herbs, fruits and whatnot. These ingredients aren’t so mysterious now and to a large extent they have lost their allure. Science has made them understandable and has uncovered their secrets.

However, imagine yourself in a remote location, nowhere near your local Space NK or Blue Mercury. What’s a girl to do?

A DIY recipe can be a skin savior in this case and can be in most cases easily made. The New York Times recently interviewed me and I gave them my favorite recipes for remedying winter skin.

On the red carpet this weekend, the New York-based stars Julianne Moore and Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared untouched by winter as they arrived at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards. Their skin was radiant, almost dewy — not dry like most faces in Manhattan these days. And not coincidentally, they were each prepped for the evening by the celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas, who also counts Naomi Watts as a regular client. The expert, who just launched her newest anti-aging solution — the Forever Facial ($700), designed to improve the skin’s elasticity through the use of heat and radio waves (“they push your collagen fibers back together again and trigger collagen production,” she explains) — says the secret to great skin, no matter the time of year, is a facial once a month. “Nothing you do at home can replace a professional exfoliation, extraction and attention,” she says.

The expert also suggests some at-home solutions like sleeping with a humidifier, taking warm baths (not too hot!), exfoliating twice a week and hydrating with a jojoba- and avocado oil-based cream, like her Daily Hydrating Cream ($75). And if you’re too good at hibernating to make it out for a session every month (we understand), Vargas shares a couple recipes to help soothe the effects of winter.

Chamomile & Rosemary Bath

“Not only will you feel relaxed from your day, this potion will soothe your skin like nothing else. Dry patches and redness will disappear overnight,” Vargas says.

1 cup chamomile tea leaves
1 cup rosemary

1. Boil both ingredients with water for fifteen minutes, strain out the leaves and add the infused water to your bath.

Yogurt, Avocado and Honey Mask

“The yogurt is an anti-inflammatory with a lactic acid component,” Vargas explains. “Avocado is something I recommend for any skin type, it’s essential to keep the skin hydrated, even in dry winter weather. The honey also hydrated, and will really transform the skin.”

½ cup yogurt
½ cup avocado
¼ cup honey

1. Mix all ingredients together and apply, leaving on the skin for 20 minutes.
