Red Light Therapy – The Time Machine Effects Of LED Light Therapy
If you have any doubts about the power of light on humans, stick around a dance club until closing time and wait for the lights to come up. Then watch as women in heels move faster than you have thought possible…
And, of course, we know about the damage that UV light can do – everything from age spots to cancer – but light, specifically red light therapy, can do good things to us too. LED light therapy is in the good category, and it’s real good. This non-invasive treatment, which feels like lying on the beach (without the UV rays), reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improves uneven skin tone, reduces pore size, brightens skin, reduces inflammation and helps to produce collagen and elastin.
So what exactly is this magic?
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, which is a computer chip encased in a glass-like resin, which emits therapeutic wavelengths (or colors) of light energy. The colors are blue or red and they target different conditions – red is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles and other visible signs of aging, while blue kills bacteria, making it an effective treatment for clearing up acne.
LED light therapy was initially developed to speed up the healing of wounds and post-surgery scars but researches were happily surprised to find that it not only worked to reduce scarring and inflammation but rejuvenated healthy skin to boot. NASA was the first to identify the wound healing benefits of red light therapy, conventional medicine was then ‘turned on’ to its benefits and the skin care field soon followed with treatments for aging skin, acne, spider veins and broken capillaries and sun damage.
What can I expect when I book a treatment?
At Joanna Vargas Salon, there are 3 LED light facial treatments to choose from that vary in length depending on your skin condition and concerns – The Vitalight (30 minutes), The Multivitalight (75 minutes), and The Sleeping Beauty (30 minutes). These facials combine microdermabrasion, customized serums and LED light therapy to rejuvenate skin, boost collagen and smooth and brighten your complexion. LED light is placed a few inches from the face and is delivered by a machine with three panels aimed at the front and both sides of the face. You will feel toasty but not hot and absolutely no burning or pain. You may notice results after one treatment but it starts gettin’ good after about 6 and Joanna usually recommends about 10 to 12 treatments to really turn back the clock. Now hold on, we’ve talked about facials and all of those yummy benefits but Joanna Vargas has invented an actual Time Machine, also known as the LED light bed. You can treat your entire body with a treatment called the Power Nap (20 minutes), which uses red led light to penetrate the layers of skin on the front of back of the body. If your thighs have been a little jealous of your face, time to hop on in the Time Machine.
Unlike certain lasers, LED light therapy is safe and effective for all skin types, ethnicities and skin conditions, it can’t burn you, there’s no downtime, it can’t be overused and is completely pain-free. The worst that can happen? You might snore a little.
