Red Light on Aging: LED Light Versus Laser for Youthful Skin
Ancient cultures understood the healing effects of light. The Greeks, Romans, Indians, Aztecs, Chinese all recognized the sun’s therapeutic effects. The Egyptians split the sun’s rays into different colors not only to maintain a sense of well-being and beauty, but also to treat various medical conditions. Ayurvedic practitioners have for centuries, used light and color therapy to promote psychological and spiritual health while supporting the optimal physical benefits.
Light therapies are making waves as a holistic and non-invasive means of treatment in many fields. LED light therapy has been used and studied extensively by NASA to treat muscle and bone atrophy in astronauts, while the U.S. Navy has long used this therapy to treat crew members aboard deep sea submarines. It has been shown to be emotionally beneficial as well and has been used to treat SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and sleep disorders. In the field of aesthetics and beauty, red light therapy has been an excellent innovation in rejuvenating and smoothing the signs of aging. Dermatologists have had great success in treating acne with blue infrared light which destroys acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface.
Lasers and LED are two of the more popular cosmetic light procedures. Lasers focus a beam of pulsating light on a specific area in short bursts. When used in such short bursts, they cause micro injuries to the skin, that the body has to heal, potentially resulting in fresher looking skin. Laser treatments are given under local or oral anesthesia with a recovery time of about 2 weeks.
LED based devices have a distinct advantage over laser treatments, as many different effective colors of light can be tightly packed together and overlap each other to deliver multiple colors or wavelengths simultaneously over a large area. Unlike laser, which is not recommended for darker skins, LED treatments are suitable for all skin types. These are painless treatments so no anesthesia is required.
LED light therapy is a non-invasive procedure done with panels of red and/or infrared lights that deliver low-level pulses of light up to activate ATP (adenosine triphosphate), within the skin cells. This promotes collagen and elastin production, in addition to improving one’s general blood circulationfor overall health of skin.
The Ancients knew the benefits of light therapies and now with the evolution of new technologies, we can utilize this knowledge for beauty and healing in a modern world that takes a toll on the mind and body to put a red light on to stop – and even reverse the aging process.
