Double Cleansing – What It Is and Why You Should Do It.
If you’re a skin care devotee then you probably know that South Korea = serious skin care. This is not the land of ‘less is more’ – a typical Korean skincare routine involves 10 steps: makeup remover + oil cleanser, water based cleanser, exfoliator, toner, essence, treatments (serums, etc.), sheet masks, eye cream, moisturizer, and sun protection. This system has become increasingly popular in the West because of one thing: results. Now, we all know the flawlessly smooth septuagenarian who swears that nothing other than olive oil has ever touched her skin – chances are, somewhere between next to nothing and those 10 steps may be your sweet spot – a skincare routine is highly personal and should be modified to suit you, with the steps that are right for your skin type. If you want to take a baby step before diving in to the 10-step method, double cleansing is a good start.
What is double cleansing?
A method made popular by Korean beauty bloggers, double cleansing helps completely remove every trace of dirt, grime, and impurities from your skin before you hit the sack.
Why should you double cleanse?
Performed at night, this cleansing method helps completely purge the skin of dirt, bacteria, makeup, any remaining sun protection product, pollutants and other impurities, to keep skin strong, clear, and healthy. Plus, it prepares your skin to absorb active ingredients from products you apply afterwards. Spending the extra time in the evening to double cleanse before bed is beneficial because your skin repairs itself at night.
While you sleep, your skin is going to work, repairing itself from the day’s damage caused by UV damage, dirt and pollution. Your skin has to work overtime and cannot properly repair itself if there is too much leftover gunk from improper cleansing.
Makeup wipes count, right? Nope. You’re not alone in thinking that makeup wipes are a good shortcut but no, they don’t cut it. Makeup wipes aren’t effective enough in removing all of your makeup and they often leave behind a pore-clogging residue. And makeup wipes can actually contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. Because the cleansers used in wipes tend to be mild, it can require a lot of rubbing and tugging to remove stubborn makeup. Performing these motions repetitively on the delicate skin around the eyes is a recipe for future wrinkles and fine lines.
How to double cleanse
Before you go to bed, follow these steps:
Step 1: Wash your hands.
This is a step many people skip in their skincare routines but it’s important to make sure your hands are clean before they touch your face. Not cleaning your hands means you are introducing any bacteria or dirt from your hands to your face, making it more difficult to get fully clean. Clean hands can really make a difference, especially if you’re acne prone.
Step 2: Use a makeup busting oil cleanser
For the first cleanse, or pre-cleanse, choose a formula designed to remove makeup and impurities, like boscia MakeUp-Break Up Cool Cleansing Oil. This cleanser uses a unique nanotechnology blend of naturally derived oils – including elegant rose hip, green tea, avocado, and olive fruit oils – that enable water to reduce the oil phase of this cleanser to micro-sized particles, rinsing away dirt, oil and waterproof makeup.
Step 3: Finish with your daily cleanser
To completely remove impurities, follow Step 2 with the right daily cleanser for your skin type.
