Can’t squeeze in a spa visit? No biggie. Your skin can still look flawless with these DIY tips and tricks from some of the best aestheticians in the biz.
Get Even (Skin, That Is)
Fruit extracts like papaya are packed with enzymes that help correct uneven skin tones, says Tammy Fender, a celebrity facialist in West Palm Beach, Florida. And milk’s lactic acid acts as a powerful hydrator, smoothing skin.
2 tbsp plain yogurt
1 tbsp raw oats
1 tsp milk
2 tbsp mashed papaya
Here’s the perfect pick-me-up. The grape seed oil in this concoction is a powerful antioxidant and the honey hydrates, reducing breakouts and plumping skin to reduce the look of puffiness and fine lines, says Joanna Vargas, a celebrity facialist in NYC.
6 teaspoons grape seed oil
2 drops rose oil
1 teaspoon warmed honey
5 teaspoons ground almonds
Mix all ingredients in a bowl, apply to face and leave on for 20 minutes. Then rinse.
Make Some Thyme
The antidote to stubborn zits: Thyme. It acts as an antiseptic, killing acne-causing bacteria and decongesting pores naturally. Use a thyme-based cleanser two to three times a week to calm overactive oil glands, says Fender. We like Dr. Perry’s CleanThyme Cleansing Bar for Face and Body.
Huge pimple? Beat it with this anti-inflammatory mask from Vargas. The malic acid in the strawberries tightens pores and the almond powder is like a gentle scrub to remove dirt. Just DON’T wipe your face with a hand towel after washing, because germs linger there. Use a clean paper towel to dab instead.
Apple cider vinegar
1 cup yogurt
1/2 cup mashed strawberry
1/2 cup almond powder
Rub a cotton ball with raw apple cider vinegar on the area that is breaking out. Use the almond powder to scrub your T-zone, where skin tends to be oilier (and where you probably have the most blackheads). Mix the strawberries and yogurt together, apply and let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.
The secret to glowing skin is good circulation. So before a big event, take a warm bath with Epsom salts and gently scrub skin to boost blood flow, says Elena Rubin, an aesthetician in NYC. Then, mix equal parts sugar and used coffee grinds (the caffeine helps tighten tired skin) and gently rub onto a damp face in circular motions for two minutes, then rinse. You’ll look great all night long.
Partied a little too hard last night? Rubin’s cure: Brew two tea bags (black tea and chamomile work best because they’re loaded with caffeine and skin-soothing tannins), then pop them in the freezer for 10 minutes to chill. Press the cold tea bags onto puffy eyes, lie down, relax, think happy thoughts. Important to note: Be sure the tea does not contain chrysanthemum—it can temporarily stain skin!
Ugh, sunburn. Beat it with this fast-absorbing aloe vera mask that won’t irritate sensitive skin. Rose helps boost circulation and will reduce redness, says Vargas.

1 tbsp aloe vera gel
2 drops rose oil
Combine and apply to face with a cotton ball.
Eat foods that are high in essential fatty acids, like olives, almonds and wheat germ for smooth, supple skin, says Fender. Hint: When shopping for oils, make sure that they are cold pressed, which preserves skin-saving benefits.
Scrub out stress with this fruit-infused recipe from Vargas. The cornmeal will remove dead skin cells without causing irritation, and the grapefruit juice contains salicylic acid that’ll prevent breakouts (plus, it smells good!)
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup corn meal
1/4 cup Grapefruit juice
Cool in the fridge, scrub onto your face for two minutes, then rinse.
