Could Your Diet Be Damaging Your Looks, Your Skin?

I have been saying it for years but its always worth repeating. Your diet, is in large measure, responsible for damaging your looks or contributing to them.

I have a few suggestion to keep your complexion and your skin, in great shape. If you follow them, and continue my prescribed skincare routine religiously, you will have firmer, wrinkle-free and glowing skin.

The Beauty Diet

High protein, low-carb diets can be disastrous for your complexion. Widely promoted in recent years as an effective means to losing weight, these diets, like Atkins Diet, can have serious health issues if carried on too long.

The acidity of meat-based diets can upset the skin’s pH and increase its susceptibility to UV damage. Also, high protein diets causes you to lose more calcium through your urine, and therefore bone density. The loss of bone density in the face can be very aging.

Although many diets are effective in dropping your size, never carry them on too long.

Too much sugar and starch in your diet can wreck your skin. Sugar promotes inflammation, promotes breakouts and worst yet, breaks down collagen. This makes your skin lose its natural elasticity, causing wrinkles and therefore sagging.

You can restrict sugar and starch while permitting complex carbohydrates as the body breaks these down more slowly and gradually increases and maintains energy levels.

The “South Beach Diet” is a good program but I must warn you, that in the first two-week phase your skin can become extremely dehydrated. The reason: you have eliminated all sugar, most carbohydrates, fruits and some vegetables.

The other side of the spectrum could be a vegan diet. It includes lots of veggies, whole grains, nuts and beans which provide plenty of age-defying antioxidants.

However, insufficient protein can cause a deficiency and make the skin appear dull, dry and unhealthy. Protein helps repairs and rejuvenates hair and skin.

If you refuse to eat animal protein, then you need to supplement it with various other sources like chickpeas, tofu, almonds, to name a few.

The common thread here is that an excessive use of any one diet can, regardless of its claims, have negative health consequences.

A better diet would include a balance of fresh meats, fish, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats like olive oil, which has been shown to keep the epidermis hydrated and provide the needed protection against the sun.

Add whole grains for an unheralded source of antioxidants. The whole range of foods would improve your skin dramatically, reducing inflammation, acne and improved elasticity.

You can defy your age and really manage how your skin looks by knowing the foods that are right for your body.
