should be easy to understand but we seldom see those. Often times spa menus describe things in medical jargon or food terms as if you were in a restaurant.
In my opinion what they should be detailing is what will the facial do or help you accomplish as a result.
Therefore if you don't get facials regularly you might have a challenge as to what type of facial to get. If this is the case then you should know that a basic cleansing facial is probably your best bet.
What to look for in a facial and how to choose one?
The Classic Facial
In the spa industry your basic facial is usually called a deep cleansing facial. This can be a bare bone treatment in many day spas because they want to up sell you on the different ways of doing it.
My main interest are results and giving what the client wants, not nickle and dime them to death. This is why I don't have a thousand variations of the same treatment and only have a few to choose from.
However, I digress! The basic facial is a deep cleansing facial and it should have the fundamentals to help you achieve clean, clear and glowing skin.
This treatment involves, cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, a mask and a moisturizer and is great for anyone with normal to dry skin.
Extractions are part of this spa treatment and are key if you want to have clear skin. You'll notice that it will help you get rid of a combination of things like oils, dirt and bacteria from your skin.
It is common for the esthetician to prepare the skin for extractions and use steam to soften the guk from your pores as well as other tricks of the trade in order to make this as painless as possible.
Cleaning your pores will reduce them in size and prevent feature breakouts.
Caution: I try to avoid any sort of metal extractors during extractions as these if not expertly done can cause scarring or discoloration. If you are not sure about the competency of your esthetician, then don't let her do it.
Acne Prone Skin
Facials with names like "clarifying" or "purifying" usually refer to treatments that are meant to treat acne prone skin. These facials usually include cleansers with salicylic acid, as they help to exfoliate dead skin and clean pores, clay mask as they help to extract impurities from your skin.
Caution: If you don't normally get facials you might breakout as you are stimulating the lymphatic system, improving circulation and generally cleaning your skin.
I would suggest you contact your esthetician and get help from her as this is usually an easy fix and is not necessarily the products or facial.
One of the oldest trick in the book as far as anti-aging facials go is to do microdermabrasion and other forms of exfoliation with your facial.
This is because exfoliation triggers the skin's healing mechanism and speeds cell turnover. This is one of the most proven ways to address fine lines and other aging skin issues.
Dead skin makes your pores look larger and wrinkles look deeper but by getting facials that include lactic acids or enzyme peels are a great way to smooth your complexion and even out your skin tone.
Fads and Crazy Sounding Treatments
Crazy sounding treatments are usually just marketing gimmicks and really have not been proven to really work. Things like snake venom, caviar or gold dust in my opinion are a bit much and hold no real value in skincare.
The best thing to do is of course try it if you must and find out for yourself but I like to stick to things that have been proven in some way.
Lastly, when choosing a facial consider what your skin issues are and ask questions to see if the facial you are getting will address these concerns.
There is a facial for your skin type, dry, oily, combination etc. and getting them regularly will give you smoother skin, less visible pores and brighter complexion.
